About Splunk AR asset tags

You can get real-time Splunk data about assets such as equipment, machinery, or retail products using Splunk AR. Attach asset tags to assets, associate the asset tags with Splunk data, and scan the asset tags with the Splunk AR mobile app to view augmented reality data or Splunk dashboards.

Asset tags are physical references that store data and wirelessly send information to mobile devices. When you scan an asset tag, Splunk AR uses the asset tag to identify the asset, retrieve the data, and present you with an AR workspace or Splunk dashboard.

You can associate AR workspaces and Splunk dashboards with a variety of user-provided asset tags or Splunk Cloud Gateway generated asset tags such as Quick Response (QR) codes and Near Field Communication (NFC) tags. Use the asset tags that best suit your organization's needs.

User-provided asset tags

You can associate data with many user-provided barcodes. Barcodes don't require setup in Splunk Cloud Gateway. User-provided asset tags are useful for organizations that have already tagged their equipment or products, making Splunk AR more scalable. For example, a retail company might receive a shipment of products that already have barcodes attached. Register the barcodes and associate them with data in the Splunk AR app.

Splunk AR supports these barcodes:

  • Aztec
  • Codabar
  • Code 128
  • Code 39
  • Code 39 Checksum
  • Code 39 Full ASCII
  • Code 39 Full ASCII Checksum
  • Code 93
  • Code 93i
  • Data Matrix
  • EAN 13
  • EAN 8
  • Interleaved 2 of 5
  • Interleaved 2 of 5 Checksum
  • ITF 14
  • PDF 417
  • QR
  • UPC-A
  • UPC-E

Splunk Cloud Gateway asset tags

You can generate QR codes and NFC tags using Splunk Cloud Gateway, a companion Splunk Enterprise app.

To set up Splunk Cloud Gateway QR codes and NFC URLs, see Register assets for Splunk AR users in Splunk Cloud Gateway in the Use Splunk Cloud Gateway manual.

QR codes

A Quick Response (QR) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information. When you scan a QR code with your mobile device's camera, the QR code wirelessly communicates information to your mobile device.

Create QR codes for AR workspaces or Splunk dashboards in Splunk Cloud Gateway. Print, laminate, place the QR codes on assets, and scan the QR code with a mobile device to view the data.

Splunk AR supports both Splunk Cloud Gateway QR codes and user-provided QR codes.

NFC tags

Near Field Communication lets two devices to communicate data when they come in contact with each other. NFC tags store Splunk data, and Splunk AR users tap NFC tags with their mobile device to view the data.

Create NFC URLs for Splunk dashboards and AR workspaces in Splunk Cloud Gateway. Then, use an NFC writer to write NFC tags with the URLs. You can purchase NFC tags and an NFC writer online or use an Android device as an NFC writer.

Because NFC tags don't provide Splunk AR with a visual reference to anchor augmented reality visualizations, use a detection image with NFC tags for Splunk AR. Detection images provide a visual reference that NFC tags lack, so Splunk AR can anchor visualizations where you place them.

See Save Splunk AR workspace placement with NFC tags for more information about how to use a detection image with NFC tags.

Splunk AR only supports NFC tags with Splunk-generated URLs.

Set up asset tags for Splunk AR

You can set up asset tags in the Splunk AR app or the Splunk Cloud Gateway app.

See Register assets for Splunk AR users in Splunk Cloud Gateway in the Use Splunk Cloud Gateway manual to register asset groups and individual assets in Splunk Cloud Gateway.

See Register Assets in Splunk AR to register individual assets in the Splunk AR app.
