New terms and concepts

While exploring the Search Experience preview, you will encounter a few new terms and concepts, which are described in the following table:

Term Description
Datasets A dataset is a collection of data that you want to search or that contains the results from a search. There are different kinds of datasets, including indexes, views, and lookups.
SPL2 The name and version of the Splunk search language, Search Processing Language, version 2 (SPL2).


There are two manuals that describe how to use SPL2:

SPL2 statements SPL2 statements are searches and other types of data-related code. There are several different SPL2 statements:
  • Searches
  • Custom functions
  • Custom data types
  • Imports
  • Exports
Module A module is like a file that contains one or more SPL2 statements and related charts. Modules are useful for grouping a set of related searches, custom functions, and custom data types. You can create charts that are based on the results from the search statements in the module. See The power of modules.
Workspace A workspace is like a folder that contains one or more modules.
  • My workspace is your personal workspace area.
  • Shared workspaces is an area where you can share workspaces with other users or groups.
