Install the Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring Add-on

  1. Get the Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring Add-on by downloading it from Splunkbase or browsing to it using the app browser within Splunk Web.
  2. Determine where and how to install this add-on in your deployment, using the tables on this page.
  3. Perform any prerequisite steps before installing, if required and specified in the tables below.
  4. Complete your installation.

Splunk Enterprise deployments

Unless otherwise noted, you can safely install all supported add-ons to all tiers of a distributed Splunk Enterprise deployment. See Where to install Splunk add-ons in Splunk Add-ons for more information.

This table provides a reference for installing this specific add-on to a distributed on-premises deployment of Splunk Enterprise:

Splunk platform component Required Comments
Search heads Yes Required to use the custom search commands available with the add-on.
Indexers Yes This add-on creates an index called sim_metrics so it must be installed on indexers. The index doesn't count towards your Splunk license charges.
Forwarders Yes This add-on requires universal or heavy forwarders if you want to perform data collection through modular inputs. For more information, see Configure inputs in the Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring Add-on.

Splunk Cloud deployments

If you want to leverage the modular input available in the Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring Add-on, you need to install the add-on on an Inputs Data Manager (IDM). The IDM is a hosted solution for Splunk Cloud for scripted and modular inputs. In a majority of cases, an IDM obviates the need for customer-managed infrastructure.

You need to request the add-on installation from Splunk Cloud Support. You also need to request that Splunk Cloud Support installs the add-on on your Splunk Cloud instance. For more information, see Install an add-on in Splunk Cloud in the Splunk Add-ons manual.
