Use Splunk Web with a proxy server

When Splunk Web is located behind a proxy server, users may have trouble with Splunk Web links that access the Splunk website. For example, some Manager pages link directly to the download site for Splunk apps and many "learn more" links will take you to the online documentation.

To resolve this, simply set the HTTP_PROXY environment variable. For permanent results, you can specify the setting in the splunk-launch.conf configuration file, located in $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/ on *nix systems and %SPLUNK_HOME%\etc\ on Windows.

In splunk-launch.conf, add this attribute/value pair:

HTTP_PROXY = <IP address or host name>:<port number>

For example:

Important: If your proxy server only handles HTTPS requests, you must use the following attribute/value pair:

HTTPS_PROXY = <IP address or host name>:<port number>

For example:

This documentation applies to the following versions of Splunk® Enterprise: 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.3.3, 4.3.4, 4.3.5, 4.3.6, 4.3.7, 5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.0.3, 5.0.4, 5.0.5, 5.0.6, 5.0.7, 5.0.8, 5.0.9, 5.0.10, 5.0.11, 5.0.12, 5.0.13, 5.0.14, 5.0.15, 5.0.16, 5.0.17, 5.0.18

The above configuration assumes you do not have proxy authentication, i.e username and password, what is the way forward if you have the same.

is there a way to set proxy authentication as well?

Not sure about the correctness of this page and comments - I didn't have any luck with these settings.<br /><br />What I think they should be (and what works, both through splunk and from within the bash shell) is:<br />http_proxy=http://:<br />(note the http:// prefixing the IP address and no spaces)<br />I also added the same value for https, so:<br />https_proxy=http://:<br />Not sure what setting an environment variable to "= :" does, but it in a shell it says "Error parsing proxy url :: Scheme missing" so I'm thinking this isn't right either<br /><br />I was testing with curl https://splunkbase.splunk.com

Some times adding the http_proxy parameter may not be enough for access to the splunk base app sites through the UI as the it uses https:// url by default.<br /><br />Adding this parameter fixes the issue.<br /><br />https_proxy = :
