Customize the login screen

You can add a custom message to the login screen. Just add an attribute to web.conf to set a custom message. You can use HTML markup to format your message and add links. Restart the splunkweb process after editing web.conf to make your message visible.

Note: Make sure your message appears in a single line in web.conf, as shown in the example below.

Example

Add the following key to the [settings] stanza in web.conf located at:
$SPLUNK_HOME/etc/system/local/web.conf
[settings]
login_content = This is a <b>production server</b>.<br />For expensive searches try: <a href="http://server2:8080">server2</a>

Comments

The example by Kbains is great, but the logo location should be specified differently. I researched it and summarized on the community boards, here: http://answers.splunk.com/answers/209850/putting-a-custom-logo-on-the-login-screen.html

Here is a better example. It replaces the Splunk logo with a custom image (cow.jpg) located in the maps apps. It also removes the footer. (NOTE: the login_content line should have no line breaks)<br /><br /># Custom content for login screen<br />#####################################<br /><br />login_content = &ltstyle&gt footer {display:none} #brand {display: none} header {height: 250px; width: 250px; background: url(/static/app/maps/cow.jpg) no-repeat;} .hint {display: none} &lt/style&gt<br /><br />#####################################

Re: Previous Comment. That was "When you use [lessthan]img src="image.png"[greaterthan],.... Nice that comments get stripped of code without warning.

HOW do you add images using login_content? When you use , what is the path to the image relative to the application directory?

Daniel333, you do need to restart Splunk Web for the customization to appear. For an alternate method to display custom login messages after login, you can use the REST API. See http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/6.0/RESTAPI/RESTsystem#messages as well as this Answers posting: http://answers.splunk.com/answers/111952/add-text-to-login-page-webconf-restart-needed.

Is there a way to do this without restarting splunk web?

Can you add a custom message without a restart?

You can even add images like company logos to the login screen using the 'login_content' variable. A bit limited, but neat, none the less.
