Changes for Splunk App developers

If you develop apps for Splunk Enterprise, read this topic to find out what changes we've made to how Splunk Enterprise works with apps in version 6.2, and how to migrate any existing apps to work with the new version.

We have deprecated some elements of Simple XML

We have deprecated a number of the elements of Simple XML, including:

  • The list element: You can no longer use this element in the panel object.
  • Row grouping: Use the panel construct instead. Any row grouping will be auto-converted to this construct.
  • The searchString, searchTemplate, searchPostProcess, populatingSearch and populatingSavedSearch elements: Use the new search element instead.
  • The earliestTime and latestTime elements: Use earliest and latest instead.

We have included a new pre-built 'panels' object

This object allows developers to package reusable dashboard panels. It is a new knowledge object in the system, and can be packaged within applications. See the Developing Views and Apps for Splunk Web manual.

We have enabled server-side caching of static assets

Splunk Enterprise now caches static assets (items that are located in the appserver/static directory within an app) on the server. This means that developers need to clear the server cache as well as their browser cache to see any change in those assets.

If they are in a dedicated development environment, they can configure the web.conf in their app to disable server-side caching of static assets.

For more information, see Clear client and server assets caches after customization in Developing Views and Apps for Splunk Web.
