Activate Splunk Assist

After you configure your Splunk Enterprise deployment for Splunk Assist, must then activate the product with a valid activation code. After you activate Splunk Assist, you can then begin seeing insights in your Splunk Enterprise deployment inside the Assist highlights page.

There is no cost to activate Splunk Assist. You don't need to buy a new license to use the service. Activation is solely for authentication and authorization, to ensure that authorized Splunk customers have access to Splunk Assist insights and reports.

After you successfully activate Splunk Assist, it begins to download updates automatically and periodically to ensure it has the latest software to provide insights on your Splunk Enterprise deployment. This auto-update process for Splunk Assist occurs in the background. You don't need to do anything to trigger it.

Activate Splunk Assist

You must possess a valid activation code to activate Splunk Assist. If you have an activation code, you can enter that code into the Activation code text box in the Activate Splunk Assist dialog box. If the code is valid, Splunk Assist begins activating immediately.

  1. Log into a running Splunk Enterprise machine that runs Monitoring Console.
  2. From the system bar, choose Settings > Monitoring Console.
  3. After the Monitoring Console page loads, click Assist from the Monitoring Console menu. The "Introducing Assist" page loads.
  4. In the Activate Splunk Assist dialog box on this page, enter the activation code you received into the Activation code field.
  5. If the "Activate Assist" button is active, click it. Splunk Assist activates, and the Monitoring Console loads the Assist main page.
  6. Proceed to the "Next Steps" section of this topic to learn how to use Splunk Assist.

Assist can take a few minutes to activate. After activation, Assist begins gathering insights immediately, but you might not see results initially for a few minutes.

If you don't have a Splunk Assist activation code

If you don't have an activation code, getting one depends on who you are in your organization.

Splunk Assist activation codes are tied to Splunk licenses. Typically, there is a person within your organization that is responsible for procuring and managing those licenses. This documentation refers to that person as the Splunk license owner.

If you are the Splunk license owner, you can obtain activation codes by following the "Get an activation code as a Splunk license owner" procedure in this topic. If you aren't, you can instead identify the correct license owner and ask them to generate an activation code for you by sending them an activation link.

Get an activation code as a Splunk license owner

As a Splunk license owner, you can obtain an activation code that you or your Splunk administrator can use to activate Splunk Assist. Remember, you can only use a valid Enterprise license to activate Splunk Assist. Free and Trial licenses are not acceptable for activation.

  1. Log into the Splunk Enterprise machine and access Monitoring Console.
  2. From the Monitoring Console menu, click Assist. The "Introducing Assist" page loads.
  3. In the Activate Splunk Assist dialog box on this page, select the Get an activation code link. The Splunk Assist Activation Code Access dialog box appears.
  4. Select Get activation code. A new browser tab opens and loads the splunk.com login page.
  5. Enter your splunk.com credentials.
  6. If you are a license owner and have access to the license key, the Splunk Assist Activation page loads, showing the License ID and Product along with the obscured Activation code. At this point, you can:
    1. Select Copy Code to copy the activation code to your computer clipboard.
    2. Select View all available licenses to see a listing of available licenses. See "View available licenses for Splunk Assist as a Splunk license owner" later in this topic for information on this option.
  7. If you don't have access to the license key, or the license you are using is not valid, an Activation code unavailable page appears. Follow the instructions on that page to learn what to do next.
  8. Return to the Splunk Assist Activation page.
  9. Complete the "Activate Splunk Assist" procedure as described earlier in this topic.

View available licenses for Splunk Assist as a Splunk license owner

If you want, when you generate an activation code, you can view the licenses that you have access to. You can also do this if you receive the "Activation code unavailable" page because you don't have access to the current license key.

If the "View all available licenses" button does not appear on the "Activation code unavailable" page, then the splunk.com account you used to log in does not have the right to access Splunk licenses. If you have an entitlement with Splunk, file a Support case to have the problem corrected.

  1. From either the "Splunk Assist Activation" or Activation code unavailable pages, select View all available licenses. The Available licenses page appears.
  2. Review this page to see the licenses and activation codes that this Splunk Enterprise instance is aware of.
    • The page displays licenses by License ID and Product. If a license has a valid activation code, that code appears, obscured, in the "Activation code" column.
  3. To see an activation code for a certain license tha thas one, click Show in the row for that license.
  4. To copy an activation code, click the clipboard logo in the row for that license.
  5. Return to the Splunk Assist Activation page.
  6. Complete the "Activate Splunk Assist" procedure as described earlier in this topic.

Request an activation code as a non-Splunk license owner

If you aren't a Splunk license owner, you can only activate Splunk Assist by requesting a code from a license owner. You can send them the activation link and wait for them to either send you back an activation code or activate the service themselves.

  4. In the Non-license Owners section of this dialog box, copy the URL from the Activation Code Link: text field.
  5. Email that link to the Splunk license owner.
  6. Wait for the license owner to send you either an activation code or notice that they activated Splunk Assist.
    1. If they send you an activation code, complete the "Activate Splunk Assist" procedure as described earlier in this topic.

Troubleshoot problems with activation

If the "Activate Splunk Assist" dialog does not appear when you first load the "Introducing Assist" page, follow these steps to address the problem and proceed to activating Splunk Assist.

Support Usage Data is Off You must turn on support usage data before Splunk Assist can work. Click the Enable Support Usage Data button to go to the Instrumentation settings page and enable support usage data. See Share data in Splunk Enterprise.
Splunk Assist cannot connect to Splunk cloud services Either a firewall rule or a network failure blocks access to Splunk cloud services. Confirm that the search head on which you run Splunk Assist has access to Splunk cloud services. Modify the firewall rules to allow access to the appropriate domains, then try again. See Configure your Splunk Enterprise deployment to use Splunk Assist.
Activation code unavailable The account you used to log into splunk.com to generate an activation code doesn't have access to your Splunk licenses, or you don't have any valid licenses for which to generate activation codes. First, confirm that you have logged into splunk.com with the correct credentials. Next, ensure that you are the license owner of the license on the deployment where you want to activate Assist. If you aren't, identify and contact the license owner of that license. The license for which you try to activate Assist can't be a free or trial license.
Expired activation code, please get a new code. The activation code you tried to use is no longer valid. Log back into The Splunk Assist activation portal and generate a new code.
