Splunk Add-on for OPC (Legacy)

Use the Splunk Add-on for OPC

Hardware and software requirements for the Splunk Add-on for OPC

Before you install and set up the Splunk Add-on for OPC, familiarize yourself with the following requirements.

Splunk admin requirements

To install the Splunk Add-on for OPC and set up your Splunk Enterprise deployment, your user account must be assigned the admin role.

To configure the Splunk Add-on for OPC, your role must have the admin_all_objects capability.

OPC administrator requirements

To set up secure communication between your OPC servers and the Splunk Add-on for OPC, work with your OPC administrator throughout the set-up procedure. During the steps in Set up the Splunk Add-on for OPC, the OPC administrator must add a certificate to the OPC server trust list as well as provide other information, credentials, or certificates to authenticate communication.

UaGateway requirements for legacy COM-based OPC DA or AE servers

If you have legacy OPC DA or AE servers that you want to collect data from, you must install the UA Gateway on those servers with a license key that allows connections from the Splunk Add-on for OPC. The UA Gateway acts as a bridge and converts the legacy COM-based OPC protocol data into OPC UA data that the Splunk Add-on for OPC can collect. Download the latest version of the gateway (UaGateway Wrapper & Proxy) from https://www.unified-automation.com/downloads/opc-ua-servers.html.

Follow these steps for each OPC DA or AE server that you want to collect data from.

  1. If you have a UA Gateway installed, uninstall it.
  2. Find the oem.ini license file found in the Splunk Add-on for OPC folder:
    • $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/Splunk_TA_opc/ on *nix systems
    • %SPLUNK_HOME%\etc\apps\Splunk_TA_opc\ on Windows
  3. Copy it to the same location as the UaGateway-setup.exe file on the OPC DA or AE server.
  4. Install the UaGateway and set it up using the wizard.
  5. Use the Configuration Tool to configure connections between the UaGateway and the underlying DA or AE server.

For assistance or support with installing and configuring the UaGateway, contact OPC support.

Required dependencies for your data ingestion management node

On the machine running the Splunk Enterprise instance that you are using to manage OPC data ingestion, you must install the required dependencies. See the instructions that match the machine's platform.

Required dependencies on Linux

  1. Install the Erlang RPM package. See https://github.com/rabbitmq/erlang-rpm.
  2. Install RabbitMQ Server version 3.7.7. See https://www.rabbitmq.com/install-rpm.html.

Required dependencies on Windows

  1. Install Erlang OTP using the installer. See http://www.erlang.org/downloads.
  2. Download and install RabbitMQ using the installer. See https://www.rabbitmq.com/install-windows.html.
  3. If your machine does not have Visual C++ 2010 SP1 installed, download and install the Visual C++ SP1 Redistributable Package. See https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13523.

Required dependencies for cloud-based installations

If your data ingestion management node is on a cloud server, make sure that the correct ports are open for RabbitMQ to function. See the Port Access section of Networking and RabbitMQ on the RabbitMQ website.

Additional platform requirements

This add-on is only supported on Linux or Windows operating systems. In addition, because this add-on runs on Splunk Enterprise, the Splunk Enterprise system requirements also apply. See System Requirements in the Splunk Enterprise Installation Manual.
