Upgrade to Splunk App for VMware 4.0.4 from 4.0.2

These steps cover upgrading from Splunk App for VMware v4.0.2 to v4.0.4 only. If your current Splunk App for VMware version is older than 4.0.2, first, Upgrade your Splunk App for VMware to version 4.0.2. You can then follow these steps to upgrade to v4.0.4:

  1. As a prerequisite, download the following:
    • The Splunk App for VMware version 4.0.4 from Splunkbase.
    • The Splunk Add-on for VMware version 4.0.3 from Splunkbase.
    • The Splunk OVA for VMware version 4.0.4 from Splunkbase.
  2. Upgrade the search head.
  3. Validate the Splunk App for VMware upgrade.

Upgrade the search head

This step depends on your environment.

In a search head cluster deployment:

  1. Upgrade all search head deployer components in etc/shcluster/apps.
  2. You can, but are not required to, delete the splunk_for_vmware/default/data/ui/html directory from etc/shcluster/apps/ on the deployer.
  3. Push the app bundle from the deployer.
  4. Enable the acceleration for data models "VMwareInventory" and "VMwarePerformance". See Enable Data model acceleration and use data models to learn how to enable data model acceleration.
  5. After upgrading, the deployer restarts all the search head cluster members. If this restart does not occur, perform a rolling restart.

In a dedicated search head deployment:

  1. Upgrade all search head deployer components in etc/apps.
  2. You can, but are not required to, delete the splunk_for_vmware/default/data/ui/html directory from etc/apps.
  3. Restart Splunk on the search head.
  4. Enable the acceleration for data models "VMwareInventory" and "VMwarePerformance". See Enable Data model acceleration and use data models to learn how to enable data model acceleration.

Validate the Splunk App for VMware upgrade on your search head

  1. Log in to the Splunk App for VMware on your search head.
  2. When the app displays the Splunk for VMware Setup page, select the Delete all deprecated Add-ons checkbox under Disable/delete old add-ons. This removes all legacy add-ons from the installation, and SA-VMW-Performance saved searches that are no longer in use.
  3. Save your configurations, and restart your Splunk platform deployment.

Upgrade the add-on on the scheduler, DCN, and indexer

We recommend upgrading the Splunk add-on for VMware v4.0.2 to v4.0.3 on the scheduler, DCN, and indexer. If you are using a version previous to v4.0.2, follow Upgrade to Splunk Add-on for VMware 4.0.2. You can then follow these steps to Upgrade to v4.0.3.
