Configure Splunk Edge Hub OS to connect to an OPC server

To collect metrics from hardware that uses the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) protocol, configure Splunk Edge Hub to connect to the OPC servers that you want to get data from.

OPC server data uses the edge_hub_logs index and splunk_edge_hub_opcua sourcetype.

Prerequisites and requirements

Complete the following requirements and prerequisites before configuring Splunk Edge Hub OS to support OPC-UA.

Requirements

Your organization is using hardware that supports the OPC-UA protocol and you're using Splunk Edge Hub for AR version or 4.1.3 or higher.

Prerequisites

Register your Splunk Edge Hub device and launch the Edge Hub Advanced Settings page.

  1. Register your Splunk Edge Hub device. See Register or unregister your Splunk Edge Hub.
  2. Create an index for OPC-UA data. See Create indexes for Splunk Edge Hub OS.
  3. Complete the steps at Access the Edge Hub Advanced Setting' page.

Steps

In the Edge Hub Advanced Settings page, complete the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the OPC-UA tab.
  2. Enter the OPC server name that you want to collect data from.
  3. Enter the server URL.
  4. Select the security mode:
    1. Select None if you're not using a certificate.
    2. (Optional) To use a certificate, select Sign and Encrypt.
      1. Select a security policy.
      2. In your OPC-UA server, accept the Splunk Edge Hub certificate.
  5. Configure the connection details. Select Anonymous or Username and password.
Anonymous doesn't require authentication. Username and password prompts you to enter your OPC-UA server credentials.
  6. Select Next. The Edge Hub Advanced Settings page verifies the OPC-UA connection.
  7. Select the metric sources you want to collect data from. You can browse or search for a metric source. The Splunk Edge Hub OS sends data from selected tags that have a Value attribute.
  8. Select Next.
  9. Configure the publishing interval for data updates. Splunk Edge Hub OS gathers data using a Data Change Subscription on the OPC server.
  10. Select Next to complete the configuration.

View data from the OPC server in Splunk Web

In the Search and Reporting app, run the following search to view data from the OPC server:

index="edge-hub-logs" sourcetype=splunk_edge_hub_opcua

Download your OPC configuration and upload it to another Splunk Edge Hub device

After completing a OPC configuration for external sensors, you can download a configuration file to use it with other Splunk Edge Hub devices. Update the configuration file to replace values that are applicable to other Splunk Edge Hub devices.

Downloading and uploading a configuration file means you don't have to repeat the configuration steps again for multiple Splunk Edge Hub devices.

See Download a configuration file and upload it to another Splunk Edge Hub device to download and upload a configuration file to other Splunk Edge Hub devices.
