System Requirements for Splunk App for Infrastructure

Review the following requirements before you deploy Splunk App for Infrastructure.

Splunk Enterprise version requirements

The Splunk App for Infrastructure version 1.2.3 supports Splunk Enterprise 7.1.x-7.2.x on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X platforms, in single-instance and distributed environments.

Splunk Add-on requirements

The Splunk Add-on for AWS 4.5 is supported. The Splunk Add-on for AWS 4.6 is not supported.

Splunk App for Infrastructure requires the following Splunk Add-ons:

  • Splunk Add-on for Infrastructure 1.2.x is required to be installed with the Splunk App for Infrastructure on a Splunk Enterprise single-instance or distributed deployment installation.
  • (Optional) Splunk Add-on for AWS is only required if collecting data from AWS CloudWatch.

Operating system support for data collection

The Splunk App for Infrastructure supports data collection from the following operating systems. For information about operating system support for installation, see Operating system support for installation.

*nix data collection script requirements, package, and actions

When installing the *nix data collection script, requirements needed from the system for installation, and what the collector installs on the server, are defined below.

*nix data collection script requirements

The *nix data collection script requirements include:

  • A supported operating system for data collection, as defined in Operating system support for data collection.
  • For Linux: the script must be run by a user with administrator privileges, and the operating system should have these dependencies available:
    • wget
    • apt-get (Debian and Ubuntu)
    • yum (Redhat, CentOS, and Fedora)
    • zypper (SUSE and openSUSE))
    • Internet access (easy install script)
  • For AWS Linux AMIs, agent based data collection is not available. For AWS monitoring, see Configure AWS Data Collection in the Administer Splunk App for Infrastructure.
  • For Mac OS X, the script must be run by a user with administrator privileges, and the entity should have these dependencies available:
    • curl
    • Homebrew
    • Internet access (easy install script)
  • For Mac OS X, the /usr/local/sbin directory must exist on the entity, and you must log in as a user that can write to the directory.

*nix data collection script package

The *nix data collection script installs the following on the server, dependent on the operating system used.

  • collectd package, which includes:
    • RHEL 6/Centos 6: The script installs collectd-5.7 rpm packages from https://pkg.ci.collectd.org/rpm/collectd-5.7/epel-6-x86_64/
    • RHEL 7/Centos7: The script installs collectd-5.8 from epel repository
    • Ubuntu/Debian: The script installs collectd-5.7 from the apt source "deb http://pkg.ci.collectd.org/deb trusty collectd-5.7"
    • Splunk's collectd plugin
    • libcurl package (required by Splunk's collectd package)
    • Splunk Universal Forwarder 7.1.0 for sending log data (if log collection is configured)

*nix data collection script actions

The data collection script performs the following:

  • Checks system for dependencies
  • Installs collectd
  • Adds write_splunk plugin to collectd package
  • Configures collectd (link to collectd configuraiton file example)
  • Starts collectd
  • Downloads Splunk Universal Forwarder
  • Configures Splunk Universal Forwarder
  • Starts Splunk Universal Forwarder. If no log sources are selected, the Universal Forwarder will not be installed.

Windows data collection script requirements, package, and actions

When installing the Windows data collection script, requirements needed from the system for installation, and what the collector installs on the server and script actions, are defined below.

Windows data collection script requirements

When installing the Windows data collection script, requirements include:

  • Script must be run by a user with administrator privileges.
  • Entity should have the following dependencies available:
    • powershell
    • Internet access (easy install script)

Windows data collection script actions

The Windows data collection script performs the following:

  • Downloads, installs, and configures the Splunk Universal Forwarder
  • Starts Splunk Universal Forwarder
  • Sets up splunk_url to send data
  • Adds custom dimensions selected in the Customize dialog to inputs.conf
  • Extracts and adds operating system (os), IP Address (ip), and operating system version dimensions (os_version) to inputs.conf
  • Sets up requested metrics and logs that need to be collected in inputs.conf

Splunk Enterprise requirements

Except as modified by statements on this page, all Splunk Enterprise system requirements apply to Splunk App for Infrastructure deployments. See System requirements for use of Splunk Enterprise on-premises.
