About VMware vSphere integrations in SAI
Use the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics to collect VMware Vsphere data in Splunk App for Infrastructure (SAI).
Changes to the VMware vSphere integration in version 2.2.0
The VMware Add-on for ITSI was removed from the ITSI package in version 4.6.0. To collect VMware data in SAI, you need to use the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics. If you were already collecting VMware data with the VMware Add-on for ITSI from a previous release, you need to upgrade to the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics. The VMware data collection component configuration has been removed from SAI and now exists in the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics.
For a compatibility matrix showing different versions of SAI with various VMware products, see SAI compatibility with VMware apps and add-ons.
Upgrade from Splunk VMware Add-on for ITSI version 1.1.1
In SAI versions 2.0.0 and 2.1.0, all components you needed to deploy VMware data collection for SAI were shipped in the ITSI installation package within the vmware_ta_itsi
parent directory. The add-on was removed from the ITSI package in version 4.6.0. If you've already deployed VMware data collection using vmware_ta_itsi
and you want to upgrade to SAI version 2.2.0 or higher, you need to upgrade to the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics version 4.0.0.
To upgrade, see Upgrade from Splunk VMware Add-on for ITSI version 1.1.1 in the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics Manual. After you upgrade, you need to restart your Splunk Enterprise instance.
Install and configure the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics
Follow these steps to collect VMware Vsphere data with the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics.
Add your ITSI license
To use the default visualizations in SAI for VMware data you need an ITSI license. Add your ITSI license to the Splunk Enterprise instance. You have two options to add your license to the instance:
- Install the license manually. For more information, see Install a license in the Splunk Enterprise Admin Manual.
- Configure the instance as a license peer. For more information, see Configure a license peer in the Splunk Enterprise Admin Manual.

You can either deploy a Data Collection Node (DCN) to collect data from VMware vSphere vCenter Servers, or you can deploy a DCN with the Splunk OVA for VMware Metrics or manually convert a heavy forwarder into a DCN.
To deploy a DCN with the Splunk OVA for VMware Metrics or manually convert a heavy forwarder into a DCN, see About the Splunk OVA for VMware Metrics in the Splunk OVA for VMware Metrics manual.
To deploy a Data Collection Node (DCN) to collect data from VMware vSphere vCenter servers, see these topics in the in the Splunk Add-on for VMware Metrics Manual:
