Splunk Industrial Asset Intelligence reached its End of Sale on February 24, 2020.

Link your asset hierarchies with operations in Splunk IAI

For each operation you create, link one or more asset hierarchies to that operation. The asset hierarchies linked to an operation define which assets your Splunk Industrial Asset Intelligence (IAI) users can browse, analyze, and monitor in that operation context.

You can link the same asset hierarchy to multiple operations. If you do, the data that you associate to that asset hierarchy is available in each operation with which that asset hierarchy is linked. However, the calculated metrics, groups, alerts, and monitor views you create in one operation are available only in that operation, even if the assets involved are in an asset hierarchy that is also linked to other operations.

Link an asset hierarchy to an operation

Prerequisites

Steps

  1. Log in to Splunk Web and access Splunk Industrial Asset Intelligence.
  2. Click the Configure gear icon.
  3. Click the Operations tab.
  4. Click the name of an operation.
  5. If there are no asset hierarchies linked with this operation, click Associate your first asset hierarchy.
  6. If there are asset hierarchies linked to the operation, click Add on the top of the list of hierarchies.
  7. Choose an asset hierarchy from the drop-down list.

Remove an asset hierarchy from an operation

You can remove an asset hierarchy from an operation. If you do this while the asset hierarchy is in use in this operation, IAI users working in this operation may experience disruption.

  • If you created calculated metrics for an asset in this asset hierarchy, removing the asset hierarchy from this operation also makes those metrics unavailable in this operation.
  • If you created alerts for a metric in this asset hierarchy, removing the asset hierarchy from this operation also makes those alerts unavailable in this operation.
  • If you created monitor views that use metrics from assets in this asset hierarchy, removing the asset hierarchy from this operation causes the widgets for those metrics to display a message stating "This metric is not available."
  • If you created calculated metrics in a group or on an asset from another asset hierarchy, and that calculated metric uses metrics from assets in this asset hierarchy, removing the asset hierarchy from this operation causes those metrics to fail.

No data is lost as a consequence of removing an asset hierarchy from an operation. If you later link the asset hierarchy back to this operation, the metrics and alerts become available again, and any metrics and views that use metrics from this asset hierarchy are restored.

To remove an asset hierarchy from an operation:

  1. Click the Configure gear icon.
  2. Click the Operations tab.
  3. Click the name of the operation from which you want to remove an asset hierarchy.
  4. Click the x next to the name of the hierarchy you want to remove from the operation.
  5. Check the boxes to confirm you understand the consequences of removing the asset hierarchy.
  6. Click Remove.
