Platform and hardware requirements

System Requirements

Licensing requirements

You must have a Splunk Enterprise license and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA) presented for the Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP to work in your environment.

Splunk requirements to run the Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP

  • Splunk version 5.0.4 or later running on Splunk indexers and search heads. See "System requirements" in the Splunk Installation Manual.
  • A default Splunk configuration with a licensing volume that can support approximately 300 MB to 1GB of data per filer per day, taking the size of your environment into consideration.
  • Resource Splunk indexers according to Splunk best practices.
  • Your Splunk server or forwarder must have network access to the storage controllers from which you are collecting data.

NetApp version support

The App is supported for use with:

  • NetApp® Data ONTAP® versions 8.0.2 to 8.2 in 7-mode and cluster mode.

The App is certified on:

  • NetApp® Data ONTAP® versions 8.0.2, 8.0.3, and version 8.2 in 7-mode only.
  • NetApp® Data ONTAP® versions 8.2 in cluster mode.

NetApp hardware support

We support NetApp® DATA ONTAP on NetApp V-series and FAS controllers.

Browser support

The Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP supports the browser versions listed below:

  • Firefox (latest)
  • Internet Explorer 9 and 10
  • Safari (latest)
  • Chrome (latest)

Note: The Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP does not support IE 8 and does not work in IE 9 Compatibility mode.

Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP data volume requirements

The Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP requires a license that supports collecting performance data at a volume of 300MB to 1GB per filer per day, and that supports a syslog data volume of 100MB. The number of volumes and disks in your NetApp environment have a direct impact on your data volume.

When you have the app up and running, you can see actual numbers for data volume being indexed in your environment by looking at the App Data Volume view in the app. From the App menu, select Settings, then App Data Volume. You can see:

  • The total quantity of data indexed over a 24 hour time period.
  • A breakdown of the type of data you are collecting.
  • The data volume for each data type indexed.

Splunk data collection node resource requirements

At a minimum, a single data collection node requires:

  • 4 cores - 4 vCPUs or 2 vCPUs with 2 cores with a reservation of 2 GHz.
  • 6GB memory with a reservation of 1 GB.
  • 4-10 GB of disk space.

At these requirements, one data collection node can collect from 15 to 50 filers. This is a safe recommendation.

Software requirements

A single data collection node requires:

  • A Splunk supported version of CentOS or RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) that is supported by Splunk version 5.0.4 or later.
  • A Splunk heavy forwarder or light forwarder, version 5.0.4 or later. This is a minimum Splunk requirement for the Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP. A Universal Forwarder cannot be used because Python is required.
  • The Splunk App for NetApp Data ONTAP app components SA-Hydra, SA-Utils, and Splunk_TA_ontap.
