Download and install Splunk App for VMware

Download Splunk App for VMware

1. Download Splunk App for VMware package from Splunk Apps and accept the license agreement.

2. Confirm the contents of the download package, splunk_app_for_vmware-<version>-<buildnumber>.zip.

  • splunk_app_for_vmware-<version>-<build_number>.zip
  • splunk_forwarder_for_vmware-<version>-<build_number>.zip
  • Splunk_TA_vcenter-<version>-<build_number>.zip
  • splunk_data_collection_node_for_vmware_<version>-<build_number>.ova

Install Splunk App for VMware

Install Splunk App for VMware on a full Splunk Enterprise instance using the same user account credentials that you used to install Splunk Enterprise. For instructions on how to install Splunk App for VMware in a clustered indexer environment, see the Splunk Enterprise Configuration Guide.


1. Get the splunk_app_for_vmware-<version>-<build_number>.zip file and put it in $SPLUNK_HOME on your Splunk Enterprise host.

2. Unzip the Splunk App for VMware package.

cd /opt/splunk
unzip splunk_app_for_vmware-*.zip

4. Verify that you successfully extracted all of the sub-directories in the $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps directory.

  • SA-Utils/…
  • SA-Hydra/…
  • SA-Threshold/…
  • SA-VMW-HierarchyInventory/…
  • SA-VMW-LogEventTask/…
  • SA-VMW-Performance/…
  • Splunk_TA_vcenter/…
  • splunk_for_vmware/…
  • Splunk_TA_vmware/…
  • Splunk_TA_esxilogs/…

5. (Optional) Remove the SA-VMW-Licensecheck folder from the $SPLUNK_HOME\etc\apps folder if it exists.

6. Restart Splunk Enterprise.

/opt/splunk/bin/splunk restart

Next, log in to Splunk Web and assign the user roles.
