Install the Splunk App for Infrastructure

You can install Splunk App for Infrastructure on Splunk Enterprise in both single-instance and distributed deployment environments. This topic shows you how to install the Splunk App for Infrastructure in both environments, and includes information about installing the required Splunk Add-on for Infrastructure and optional Splunk Add-on for AWS.

This topic includes installing the Splunk App for Infrastructure:

Install in a single-instance deployment

Install the Splunk App for Infrastructure on a single Splunk Enterprise instance using one of the options listed in the table. In a single-instance deployment, the required Splunk Add-on for Infrastructure and optional Splunk Add-on for AWS must also be installed on the same instance of Splunk Enterprise. The Splunk Enterprise instance serves as both the search head and the indexer.

Ways to install the Splunk App for Infrastructure on a single instance

Install from the... Steps
Apps browser Use the Apps browser in the Splunk Enterprise user interface.
  1. In Splunk Enterprise, go to Apps > + Find More Apps.
  2. Search for Splunk App for Infrastructure.
  3. Select Install and follow the prompts.
  4. Search for Splunk Add-on for Infrastructure.
  5. Select Install and follow the prompts.
  6. (Optional) If if collecting AWS CloudWatch data from your AWS instance, install Splunk Add-on for AWS. Search for Splunk Add-on for AWS.
  7. Select Install and follow the prompts.
  8. Restart splunk as prompted.
Upload the App Manually upload the app to the Splunk Enterprise user interface.
  1. Download the Splunk App for Infrastructure package from Splunkbase, at https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/3975/
  2. In Splunk Enterprise, click the Apps gear icon or go to Apps > Manage Apps > Install app from file
  3. Upload the Splunkbase file.
  4. Repeat these steps to install the Splunk Add-on for Infrastructure. Download the add-on from Splunkbase at https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/4217/
  5. (Optional) Repeat these steps to install the Splunk Add-on for AWS if collecting AWS CloudWatch data from your AWS instance. Download the add-on from Splunkbase at https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/1876/
  6. Restart splunk as prompted.
Command line Install the Splunk App for Infrastructure from the command line.
  1. Download the Splunk App for Infrastructure from Splunkbase, at https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/3975/
  2. On server with Splunk Enterprise, untar the downloaded file in $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/ on *nix, or %SPLUNK_HOME%\etc\apps directory on Windows.
  3. Repeat these steps to install the Splunk Add-on for Infrastructure. Download the add-on from Splunkbase at https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/4217/
  4. (Optional) Repeat these steps to install the Splunk Add-on for AWS if collecting AWS CloudWatch data from your AWS instance. Download the add-on from Splunkbase at https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/1876/
  5. Restart splunk as prompted.

Install the Splunk App for Infrastructure in a distributed deployment, as described in the installation walkthrough. The table also includes information about installing the app in a distributed deployment.

Distributed deployment

See Set up the Splunk App for Infrastructure in a distributed deployment, which includes:

  1. Install the Splunk App for Infrastructure on search heads and heavy forwarder.
  2. Install the Splunk Add-on for Infrastructure on indexers and heavy forwarder
  3. (Optional) Install the Splunk Add-on for AWS on the heavy forwarder
Search head Install the app on a search head:
  1. Download the app from Splunkbase.
  2. Untar the downloaded file in the $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps directory on *nix or %SPLUNK_HOME%\etc\apps directory on Windows.
  3. Restart the search head.
Search head cluster

To install on a search head cluster, use the configuration bundle method to distribute the app to your cluster members. See Deploy a configuration bundle in the Splunk Enterprise Distributed Search manual.
