Configure the Splunk Add-on for AppDynamics

Perform the following high-level steps to install the Content Pack for Splunk AppDynamics:

  1. Determine where to configure the add-on.
  2. Allow the Splunk Add-on for AppDynamics to access your Splunk AppDynamics organization by configuring an account using your organization's access token and controller URL.

Where to configure the add-on

The following table explains where to perform the configuration steps depending on your environment type:

  • Inputs Data Manager (if using the modular input)

Configuration steps

To configure the Splunk Add-on for AppDynamics:

Step 1: Configure Splunk AppDynamics APIs

  1. Create an API client to enable access to the Splunk AppDynamics controller. See API Clients.
    1. This step is required to collect data for high-level status, database metrics, hardware metrics, Secure Application, events, and custom metrics.
  2. (Optional) To collect analytics data, create an API key to enable access to the AppDynamics Analytics Events REST API. See Manage API Keys.

Step 2: Add a controller connection

This step is required to collect data for high-level status, database metrics, hardware metrics, Secure Application, events, and custom metrics.

  1. Obtain the Splunk AppDynamics client name and client secret:
    1. In the Splunk AppDynamics user interface, select your user profile in the header. Then, select Administration.
    2. Select the API Clients tab.
    3. Select the API client that you created in the previous section.
    4. Copy the Client Name and Client Secret. You'll need to provide them in the Splunk Add-on for AppDynamics UI.
  2. Create the controller connection:
    1. In the Splunk Enterprise main menu, select Apps, then Splunk Add-on for AppDynamics.
    2. Select Configuration.
    3. In the Controller Connections tab, select Add.
    4. For Name, enter a name for the API key.
    5. For Controller URL, enter your Splunk AppDynamics controller URL. The controller URL follows the format https://<account>.saas.appdynamics.com.
    6. For AppD Client Name and AppD Client Secret, enter the values you copied from the Splunk AppDynamics UI.
    7. Select an Authentication type.
    8. Select Add.

(Optional) Step 3: Add an analytics connection

This step is required to collect Analytics search data retrieved from an ADQL query.

  1. Obtain the Splunk AppDynamics global account name and client secret:
    1. In the Splunk AppDynamics navigation menu, select Analytics.
    2. Select Configuration.
    3. Select the API Keys tab.
    4. Locate the API key you created in Configure Splunk AppDynamics APIs. Copy the Name and Key. You'll need to provide them in the Splunk Add-on for AppDynamics UI.
  2. Create the analytics connection:
    1. In the Splunk Enterprise main menu, select Apps, then Splunk Add-on for AppDynamics.
    2. Select Configuration.
    3. Select Analytics Connections.
    4. Select Add.
    5. For Name, enter a name for the API key.
    6. For Global Account Name, enter the Name you copied from the Splunk AppDynamics UI.
    7. Select the Analytics URL.
    8. For AppD Client Secret, enter the Key you copied from the Splunk AppDynamics UI.
    9. Select Add.
