What's a dataset?
A dataset is a collection of data. It's as simple as that.
When you create a search you must identify which dataset you want to search. To identify a dataset, you specify the name of the dataset.
When you add data to the Splunk platform, the data is stored in indexes on disk. Indexes are one kind of dataset. When you run a search, a job dataset is created to hold the search results. A job is another kind of dataset.
For more information about datasets, dataset literals, and dataset functions, see Datasets.
