Install and refresh the sample data

Included with the Search Experience preview are a set of sample data and sample modules that you and your users can use to explore the new UI.

The sample data contains an event index dataset and other datasets from a fictional e-commerce site called "Buttercup Games". See Sample data.

Only a Splunk Admin can install the sample data. The sample data is installed on the tenant and is available to all users.

Install the sample data

To install the sample data on your tenant:

  1. On the Datasets page, select Install the sample datasets.
  2. For Sample datasets, select Install.

The sample datasets are added to the tenant in the /splunk_sample_data/sample_datasets namespace. Users will see the sample datasets in the list of datasets that they have access to.

Users can install the sample modules, which are added to their personal My workspace area.

The sample data is a static set of data. To use the sample data, set the time range picker to All time.

Refresh the sample data

Periodically the sample data is refreshed to, among other things, update the dates for the events.

To refresh the sample data:

  1. On the Datasets page, select Install the sample datasets.
  2. For Sample datasets, select Reinstall.

The sample datasets are updated on the tenant.
